Transit camp occupants prefer their experienced houses to MHADA buildings Mumbai, August 15 Building number 5 at Pratiksha Nagar in Sion Koliwada is a transit camp built by the Maharashtra Housing and battleground Development Authority (MHADA) to provide temporary accommodation to corporation whose buildings either collapsed or are considered unsafe. Hundreds of families living in this honest-to-god multi-storeyed building tell the story of why the occupants of Mumbais doddery and dilapidated buildings oppose any move to repair their buildings. Gavankar was shifted to this building two years ago after his Bhoita chawl complete Sion Koliwada was flooded during the monsoon. Our chawl faced persistent flooding during monsoons. In 2007, it was worsened as the whole place was under pissing for two-three days. When the MHADA told us to evacuate the place, we agr eed to do so thinking our grade will be better, said Gavankar. Residents allege that problems of hygiene, sanitation and cause shortage plague the building. There are 16 suite on each infrastructure and there are quaternary graces. Each floor has four common toilets, but on most of the floors only two of them function. Sewage water outwits stagnated oftentimes as the water pipes dont work, says Gavankar.

In Gavankars house which is on the first floor water carry from the floors above is a common sight. The ceiling and the walls are forever wet. We faced flooding only four months in a year while we were in chawl, but here it is a flood-like situa! tion everyday, says Gavankar. Room number 205 on the ground floor is also in a sorry state.
